Low Impact Denim is a new concept introduced by Jack & Jones that aims to reduce the impact our production process has on the environment.
We want to challenge the existing jeans production methods and create jeans that maintain current quality standards and trends, but with a reduced use of water and energy. All savings are related to the jeans finishing process.
All of this is made possible with the new technology that replaces the production methods we see today. The wash pattern of these jeans is made with laser and instead of using water to fade the denim, we use natural ozone gas. We also reuse the denim leftovers which are normally disposed of.
We can actually control how intense we want the laser to be. It can either burn the surface of the denim to create moustache effects and breaks, or it can just fade the denim. This way we get just the authentic and artistic expression we want.
In typical jeans production, stonewash and other fading agents are used to give the denim a natural and authentic look. For Low Impact Denim, we use ozone, a natural gas that occurs in thunderstorms. The final look of the garment is the same, but the amount of water we use has been reduced.
Leftover scraps are inevitable when you cut the denim. Instead of disposing of them, we reuse them in the fabric production. The scrap materials are mashed up and shredded into threads. The threads are then blended with conventional cotton to make sure the strength of the fabric matches our high standards.
For a pair of jeans to qualify as Low Impact Denim, we have to lower the use of water by at least 40%. In 2012 we will have saved at least 25 million litres of water using this new process.
We have partnered with SGS who is a leader in social and environmental auditing. They ensure that our calculations reflect the objective, and they do that by visiting production facilities to verify the gathered data.
We use Low Impact Denim as a platform for trying out new sustainable production methods. We want to implement sustainable processes in our existing methods in order to reduce our impact on the environment. With Low Impact Denim we can make sure that we are always one step ahead.
